This rooftop deck makeover in Illinois transformed a neglected, industrial space into a beautiful and functional outdoor retreat. A level, durable, and visually stunning rooftop deck built to perform and withstand the elements.
Before the Rooftop Transformation:
The rooftop, adjacent to a mixed-use office building, originally served as a maintenance zone. A single door opened onto an unwelcoming expanse filled with outdated equipment and lacking a clear purpose. A stairway 60 feet away led to street level, but the space in between was largely ignored—until now.
Rooftop Deck Prep and Waterproofing
After relocating HVAC units to the upper rooftop tier, the transformation began. The crews laid down Zip System® board followed by a waterproof membrane. Adding to the insulation and drainage strategy, large rigid foam (Styrofoam) panels were precisely cut and placed over the Zip board layer.
Rooftop Decking System Components
This rooftop deck makeover features large-format Ipe wood pavers over Buzon PB-Series pedestals. Slope correctors compensated for the roof’s pitch, while spacer tabs ensured proper alignment and drainage. The hidden PB-Fastener system provided wind-uplift protection by securing each paver corner to the pedestal head. Profile-view photos reveal how the dramatic slope at the rooftop edges, an architectural challenge solved with Buzon’s innovative slope corrector.
